Syllabus 2017-18

L. Givins  -  Room 206/204/212

Email:  lynne.givins@spart1.org

Course Description:  Physical Science offers an introduction to chemical and physical properties of matter, forms of energy and laws of motion.  The concepts taught in physical science cover two broad areas:  chemistry and physics.  More concepts in Chemistry will be covered so that students will be ready for Chemistry 1 in the 11th grade.

Materials:  In order to complete the course successfully, each student needs the following materials.

  1. Chromebook – We will be using the chromebooks regularly in my class.

  2. Loose-leaf paper – All labs and classwork/homework may be written up on loose-leaf paper.  Spiral bound paper with torn edges is not acceptable.

  3. Pens and pencils – Each student is responsible for providing writing instruments.

  4. Calculator – a simple calculator will be needed at various times during the semester.

Grading:  Grades will be calculated using the following breakdown.

Tests – 50%

Labs  -  20%

Quizzes/HW/CW  -  20%

Projects  -  10%

Class Rules:

  1. Be on time to class or school detention will be assigned.  Have your chromebook out and be working on the daily bellringer when the late bell rings.

  2. Students must have their chromebook in class every day.  The device must be charged and ready for class.  Students will not be allowed to go and get their chromebook if they are day users.

  3. Turn in assignments on time.  We will be turning in assignments on chromebooks which has a time stamp provided so that the teacher knows who has turned in an assignment.

  4. Only four passes will be allowed out of class.  After the fourth pass detention will be assigned.

  5. No health room visit will be allowed unless you use one of your passes.  If you need medication, the nurse will deliver it to the classroom.

  6. Cell phones must be on silent or vibrate when they are in the classroom.  If a teacher has asked a student to put away their electronic device and it is seen again, the teacher may remove it until the end of class or release it to the office.  If this issue begins to be a problem, a referral will be written.

  7. Headphones may not be used or worn during tests or quizzes.

  8. All discipline and consequences will be dictated by school policy (Please see your

handbook!)
